University of Leeds staff and students can access the Bridgeman Education's database with over 330,000 images from galleries, museums and private collections with a new app. The app allows you to search, view images and their metadata, and create and save slide shows (once you have created a profile and registered on your computer).
Bridgeman Education is available in the library catalogue. To get the app, visit the app store on your iPhone 4, iTouch, or iPad or via iTunes. (Requires iOS 4.1 or later.) Then come to the Arts and Social Sciences office in the Brotherton Library so that library staff can activate it for you. Political economy in hard times - free access
Here is a useful resource offering free access to 65 journal articles covering 8 themes of politics and international political economy. Topics covered are:
Causes of the Financial Crisis, Financial Crisis Impact and Management - Regional Focus on the Financial Crisis - Learning from the Financial Crisis - The Financial Crisis as a Crisis of Capitalism - Opportunities Emerging from the Financial Crisis - Globalization Security and Defence in Hard Times Materials are taken from recent issues of academic journal titles published by Routledge.
The Library's subscriptions cover to these journals via the Catalogue is more extensive than offered here, but this represents a good one-stop resource.

Bridgeman Education: the New Image Database
We are pleased to announce the Library now provides access to a new major image database: Bridgeman Education. This database gives you access to over 300,000 high-quality images, all copyright cleared for educational use, with access to the visual culture of every civilization across continents and period from prehistory to the present. The databases allow you to search, browse, select and download images into folders that you create. It can be found by searching the catalogue. The Library will still continue to provide access to ArtStor until December.

Work Experience Student
Rachel Pallister a pupil at Royds Language College spent a week in the Brotherton Library on work experience. Below are her thoughts about her time with us:
With ornate marble stone pillars and an azure lit dome roof, the Brotherton Library looks magnificent; the sort of place that you imagine when you think of a library. Having spent a week here as my work experience placement, I have discovered, that after working as a librarian at my school library, working at a university library is on a much larger and more complex scale. However, if, after you have re-stacked and re-organised books on to their appropriate shelves and have checked that everything is labelled correctly, a student is then helped by using the book – even when they put the book back in another place afterwards – it gives you a sense of satisfaction to know that a stranger has been helped by your work. The staff I worked with were all very pleasant and understanding explaining about aspects of their job. With most students gone, except the graduates coming in at various points during the week for their ceremony, the library was a quiet and relaxing place to be, although the staff working there repeatedly told me that in September it is mayhem, with new and old students running about the campus in search of books for their course. Conclusively, my week stay at the library was an altogether enjoyable experience, observing the pace of work and what is needed to ensure that the entire library runs smoothly.

Special Collections Exhibitions
This year sees the 350th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Society, the world’s oldest scientific institution. An exhibition at the entrance to the Brotherton Library marks this occasion, displaying books and manuscripts from Special Collections, including works by Robert Hooke and Sir Isaac Newton.
There is also an exhibition in the Special Collections foyer which uses books, broadsheets and cartoons to illustrate the development of elections, electioneering and voting in Britain over the past 300 years.
