Leeds Read 2009
Who has given you the most reading pleasure?
Leeds Read is an annual event run by the University Library, promoting reading for pleasure amongst the staff and students of the University, and raising money for Book Aid International. This year we're celebrating character.
We want to know who is your favourite literary character - who has inspired or intrigued you, maddened or charmed you? Is it a wizard or witch, sleuth or spy? Human or animal, insect or alien? Who has given you the most reading pleasure?
Nominate and be nosey about (or inspired by) other people's nominations at www.leedsread.co.uk and you could win a lovely prize. Then from 25th February, you can cast your vote for one of the characters from the shortlist of nominations, to become the University’s Leeds Read 2009. The University's favourite literary character will be revealed on World Book Day: 5th March.
Leeds Read is also proud to present:
An evening with Sophie Hannah
Tuesday 24th February, 18.00, Brotherton Room
Sophie Hannah is a poet and novelist, equally brilliant as either. The Independent has called her "The brightest young star in British poetry" and The Poetry Review declared (in capitals) "SHE IS A GENIUS". As the author of best-selling psychological thrillers, "Sophie Hannah just gets better and better", according to The Guardian. As if that weren't enough, she also writes for children, including her own, and is a terrific performer.
Sophie, who lives near Leeds, has a special relationship with Leeds University Library, as it now looks after her literary archive, which uniquely documents her writing from poems written at the age of eight - not that long ago! - to her successes of the present. Work that's so good on paper is wonderful when presented in person by its creator. We're proud that Sophie will help us celebrate The Leeds Read 2009.
Places are limited so please book your place at: http://www.leedsread.co.uk/
Although the event is free to attend, there will be a collection for the charity Book Aid International. Refreshments will be provided.
