Research students: have your say: give your views on Library behaviour
The Library is reviewing its policies on user behaviour and we're keen to hear from research students about this. Should we allow more food and drink? What do you think about noise? We'd like to hear your views so please email me if you would like to attend a focus group about library behaviour on Thursday 3rd December at 10 am.

WREO (White Rose eTheses Online).
The international profile of individual doctoral researchers, and the University, is about to be given an online boost through a new e-theses service, WREO (White Rose eTheses Online) http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/
Data from other e-theses services demonstrate the huge impact that online access has, some theses attracting hundreds of downloads where historically access and use was very restricted. Theses will be discoverable through search engines like Google, and be a part of the British Library’s EThOS (Electronic Theses Online Service), which will ensure long-term preservation and access.
Current PhD students can choose to opt into the service, but students registering from 2009/10 onwards will be required to submit an electronic copy of their PhD thesis for inclusion in WREO. There will be an option to delay access to their thesis for a set period of time if needed, as in the current system. WREO has been developed by the Library, RSA and the University Copyright Officer.

New furniture
Over the summer we've had a range of new furniture installed on levels one and two of the Main building of the Brotherton Library. We've still got a few finishing touches to make, but the area is now in use. Most of the desks have power sockets and there is wifi access. This means we've now got a quiet area for laptop use in addition to the facilities in the group study area of the West Building. Let us know what you think.

Marks & Spencer: Celebrating 125 years
British icon Twiggy will join M&S Chairman, Sir Stuart Rose and Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Arthur to open M&S’ 125th Birthday Exhibition, ‘Marks in Time’, on 4 June 2009.
Developed in partnership with the University of Leeds , the exhibition will unveil highlights of the Marks & Spencer archive to the public for the first time. It will take visitors on a journey through time with a unique showcase of around 200 fashion and home products, food packaging and photographs, and company literature and advertising, some of which have never been seen publicly before.
The collection has been curated by M&S archivists and will be on show in a free public exhibition housed in the University of Leeds ' Centenary Gallery within the Parkinson building.
M&S and the University of Leeds are in advanced discussions about permanently relocating the entire company archive to Leeds and housing it in a purpose-built location on campus. This unique archive - of more than 60,000 items - would be made available to staff and students for research, teaching and learning, and be fully accessible to the public for the first time whilst continuing as an important internal research facility for the M&S team.

Leeds Read 2009
Who has given you the most reading pleasure?
Leeds Read is an annual event run by the University Library, promoting reading for pleasure amongst the staff and students of the University, and raising money for Book Aid International. This year we're celebrating character.
We want to know who is your favourite literary character - who has inspired or intrigued you, maddened or charmed you? Is it a wizard or witch, sleuth or spy? Human or animal, insect or alien? Who has given you the most reading pleasure?
Nominate and be nosey about (or inspired by) other people's nominations at www.leedsread.co.uk and you could win a lovely prize. Then from 25th February, you can cast your vote for one of the characters from the shortlist of nominations, to become the University’s Leeds Read 2009. The University's favourite literary character will be revealed on World Book Day: 5th March.
Leeds Read is also proud to present:
An evening with Sophie Hannah
Tuesday 24th February, 18.00, Brotherton Room
Sophie Hannah is a poet and novelist, equally brilliant as either. The Independent has called her "The brightest young star in British poetry" and The Poetry Review declared (in capitals) "SHE IS A GENIUS". As the author of best-selling psychological thrillers, "Sophie Hannah just gets better and better", according to The Guardian. As if that weren't enough, she also writes for children, including her own, and is a terrific performer.
Sophie, who lives near Leeds, has a special relationship with Leeds University Library, as it now looks after her literary archive, which uniquely documents her writing from poems written at the age of eight - not that long ago! - to her successes of the present. Work that's so good on paper is wonderful when presented in person by its creator. We're proud that Sophie will help us celebrate The Leeds Read 2009.
Places are limited so please book your place at: http://www.leedsread.co.uk/
Although the event is free to attend, there will be a collection for the charity Book Aid International. Refreshments will be provided.
